Take two conroes, slap onto a single cpu chip and you have an instant quad cpu machine. The problem is, Even in software that’s optimized for SMP the results have been far from convincing on the desktop side. People simply don’t need SMP in their daily tasks unless you do heavy multitasking and CAD work. Even then from the benchmarks i have seen you might get no more than 50% gain. That’s pretty inefficient in my book. Take a look at the benchmarks linked below. For the desktop these chips really aren’t necessary. Even dual core isn’t really necessary.
